  • Republic and the last twelve years

The first meeting of the first Constituent Assembly declared Nepal a republic on June 3, 2008. From today, the Republic of Nepal has completed 13 years and entered 13 years. The proclamation of the republic was a turning point in Nepali politics, a semantic-political effort to lead Nepali society in a democratic manner.

A section of the people was seeking change from the situation of discrimination, inequality and under-representation imposed by feudalism. The people's movement that combined all these forces finally provided the basis for institutionalizing the republic through the Constituent Assembly. While the country is moving towards a republic by abandoning the monarchical system, many of the dreams shared by the leaders with the people are still dreams. In a federal democratic republic, it was explained that no one suffers. But even after so many years of the establishment of the republic, there was no environment for the common people to feel the change. Although the policy has changed since the establishment of the republic, the leadership has not been able to change its thinking accordingly.

Looking at today's trend, only the name has changed. After the advent of the republic, the king was replaced by the president, but when you look at the cover, the salute and the red carpet, you can see the king. In the 12 years since the restoration of the republic, there have been 10 prime ministers and about 300 ministers, but the presence of women, dalits, janajatis, Madhesis and minorities in the cabinet is low. Even in the courts, the practice of making appointments on the basis of political affiliation began in this republic. At the same time, the tendency to ignore those who have struggled to do something for the country and to embrace oneself and those close to them is the most valuable in these 12 years. In the 25 years since the Maoists started the armed struggle for equality, in the 14 years of the Second People's Movement, in the 12 years since the republic came to the country, in the four years since the inclusive constitution was drafted, Rukum has gone back to heinous crimes like untouchability and racism. "Was that the essence of the republic?" The Republic of Nepal needs to change the consciousness and behavior of the common man, not limiting equality to paper.

In these 12 years, political efforts to institutionalize the republic have paid off. The constitution has been made. Federalism has been implemented. The groundwork for proportional representation has been laid in other state bodies. Despite the political stability after the last election, the leadership of the government has not been able to move forward with a centralized mentality. People's demands have not been addressed as they have been rejecting the basic conditions of economic development. When it comes to earthquakes, blockades, corona epidemics, the hollowness of our leadership and state machinery has been seen. But it does not make the principle of a republic irrelevant, but rather paves the way for the institutionalization of a democratic republic at the community level and at every civic level.

Many changes have taken place in Nepal, people have been elected by the people to determine the fate of the country. It is said that even the river returns in 12 years. Let the change in the lives of the common people be felt quickly and let the people be happy, happy and prosperous. Let's hope that Nepalis will soon see a golden dawn with the politics of the country. Happy Republic Day!
